Semmalar Annam

Biography:

Semmalar Annam, an Indian actress hailing from Coimbatore, gained prominence with her role in the critically acclaimed Tamil drama film “Ammani” (2016), directed by Lakshmy Ramakrishnan. Prior to her film career, Semmalar directed and acted in over fifteen short films during her college years.

Raised in Coimbatore, Semmalar is the eldest daughter of A.V. Karuppasamy and Boovathy, with a younger brother named Samaran.

Educationally, Semmalar pursued B.Sc. Visual Communication studies at PSG College of Arts and Science, followed by post-graduation in Mass Communication and Journalism from the same institution. Additionally, she undertook a course in acting and theater at the Stanislavsky Acting School in Chennai, which paved the way for her entry into the Tamil film industry.

During her time at PSG College of Arts and Science, Semmalar actively participated in street plays organized by her college professor CR Jayaprakash under the Eco Club. These street plays, focusing on environmental and social issues, played a significant role in raising awareness and initiating positive change in society.

Semmalar’s debut film, “Malarmathi,” centered around a sexually abused orphan, garnered critical acclaim and earned her the Best Film and Best Director awards at Legend 2010, a state-level short film festival organized by the Department of Visual Communication, Sathyabama University, Chennai.

In “Ammani,” Semmalar portrayed the role of a frustrated daughter-in-law, adding depth to the character of Salamma, a diligent government hospital worker. Apart from her film endeavors, she has also appeared in various advertisements and documentaries, showcasing her versatility as an actress.
