Painting was Selvakumar’s first pastime during his school days. He began to replicate the images he saw in magazines with paint. He came to understand eventually that he wanted to create his own unique images. And so his journey into the world of photography began. His passion for photography soon eclipsed his interest in painting.
Selvakumar completed his studies at Madras Christian College and received a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication. He studied a great deal about the craft of cinematography in college, and his enthusiasm for the medium gradually grew from his love of photography. He was astounded by the cinematographers’ skill when he began to watch their classics.
He was a cinematographer for over fifty short films, both before and after graduating from college. After graduating from college, Selvakumar worked as George C. Williams’ cinematographer’s assistant on the films Raja Rani and Kaththi. With Maanagaram (2017), he made his big screen debut and won critical praise for his performance.
Selvakumar contributed to multiple movies, such as Gypsy (2020) and Dharala Prabhu. Regarding Gypsy, a critic commented that “Selvakumar’s camera switches between its role as a silent spectator when Gypsy goes about his daily duties and, at the same time, breathtakingly captures the gorgeous locations in all its splendour”
