Saran, sometimes known as K. V. Saravanan, is an Indian film director who primarily works in Tamil cinema. He used to work as K. Balachander’s assistant. Gemini Productions is the producing company he owns.
T. Kulandaivelayudam, Saran’s father, was employed at the Directorate of Examinations, and a large number of his relatives are educators. After completing his visual communications diploma at the College of Arts and Crafts, he went on to become a textile design instructor.
During his year-long tenure as an educator, Saran collaborated with Mohana, a woman who served as K. Balachander’s art director. Saran’s favorite director out of all of them was KB. Saran thought that this connection would hold the secret to reaching him. When KB was directing Pudhu Pudhu Arthangal (1989), he joined as an assistant director.
Saran was a cartoonist for Ananda Vikatan by then as well. He would finish this task at two in the morning, take a short nap, and then resume working with KB by seven. Eventually, helping KB became too much for Sarann to handle, so she gave up on being a cartoonist.
Then Sarann’s debut movie was released. He says that the idea for the plot of his debut film, Kadhal Mannan (1998), came from his “wondering what would happen if a girl, who is engaged to a particular person, falls in love with someone else.” Veteran music composer M. S. Viswanathan made his acting debut in the movie in a supporting role, and Assamese star Maanu and music composer Bharadwaj also made their debuts.
Before the movie came out, the soundtrack received excellent reviews. At first, Viswanathan had rejected the proposal, but actor Vivek eventually persuaded him to participate in the movie. Critics gave the movie favorable reviews, with one critic applauding the movie for addressing a taboo subject.
The reviewer maintained that Ajith Kumar “was back at his best” but gave credit to Maanu’s performance and the soundtrack of Bharadwaj for the film’s success as well. At the box office, the movie opened to a positive reception.
Although it was only sold for Rs 16 million, the first copy was valued at Rs 22 million. In spite of everything, it completed in 100 days and restored Ajith Kumar’s market following a run of losses.
Ajith Kumar insisted on doing another movie for the company, Amarkalam (1999), since the producers of his first film cooperation with Sarann, Kadhal Mannan, Venkateswaralayam, had suffered significant financial losses on that project.
Shalini was studying when Sarann approached her, but after three months of pursuing her, he was able to get her to sign up as well. Amitabh Bachchan was first approached to play Tulasi Das; he accepted but eventually withdrew from the picture.
The film’s lead actors, Ajith Kumar and Shalini, fell in love while it was being made, and they were married in April 2000. Production on the movie started in January 1999. At the time of its premiere, the movie received mostly great reviews.
One critic noted that the “climax is also very well-developed” and complimented Ajith Kumar’s acting, calling the movie’s “okay storyline made very good because of its brilliant execution”.
After his previous film Vaali, lead actor Ajith Kumar’s career took off as the movie became a huge commercial hit at the box office. As a thank you for the success, Ajith went on to buy Sarann an automobile.
His next movie, Parthen Rasithen (2000), starred Prashanth and Simran, who were together for the third time after major hits like Kannedhirey Thondrinal and Jodi. This was a big office success and received positive reviews for Simran’s portrayal in her debut villainous role.
Even though AR Rahman composed music for his next movie, Alli Arjuna (2002), it was a box office failure. Subsequently, he directed a picture for Vikram under the banner of AVM Productions in Gemini (2002).
At the time, it was an enormous hit, catapulting Vikram to stardom. Ajith was unable to act due to his racing career. The successful film Jay Jay (2003) starring Madhavan was then directed by him.
Following Jay Jay, Saran collaborates with Kamal Haasan on Vasool Raja MBBS (2004), a Hindi film version of Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. for the first time. The movie was a commercial success and earned favorable reviews. His followin
g movie, Attahasam (2004), reunites him with Ajith and likewise became a box office hit. Following this, Saran produced and directed Idhaya Thirudan (2006), starring Jayam Ravi, under the direction of seasoned filmmaker K. Balachander.
The movie got mixed reviews and was eventually deemed a box office failure. His upcoming project, Vattaram, starring Arya, was well-received by critics and performed well at the movie office.
Sanjanaa and Sanjith are Saran’s two children with his wife Subha. K. V. Guhan, his younger brother, is a cinematographer in the Tamil film business.
