Sam Rockwell
Biography:
Sam Rockwell was born on November 5, 1968, in Daly City, California, to actors Pete Rockwell and Penny Hess. After his parents divorced when he was five, he lived with his father in San Francisco while spending summers with his mother in New York City. At ten, he made a small stage appearance with his mother in an East Village improv sketch, portraying Humphrey Bogart.
He began high school at the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts, where classmates included Margaret Cho and Aisha Tyler, but ultimately graduated from Urban Pioneers, an alternative school known for its laid-back reputation. The environment rekindled his interest in acting, and after appearing in an independent film during his senior year, he moved to New York to pursue acting. He later trained at the William Esper Studio’s Professional Actor Training Program.
Rockwell’s first film role came in the 1989 horror movie Clownhouse. In the early 1990s, while living in New York, he juggled small parts in television series such as The Equalizer, NYPD Blue, and Law & Order with minor roles in films like Last Exit to Brooklyn and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He supported himself with jobs as a restaurant busboy, bicycle deliveryman, and even briefly worked as an assistant to a private detective. A lucrative Miller beer commercial in 1994 finally allowed him to pursue acting full-time.
His breakthrough came with Tom DiCillo’s Box of Moonlight (1996), where he played an eccentric recluse, a role that brought him critical attention. This was followed by acclaim for Lawn Dogs (1997), which earned him Best Actor awards at both the Montreal World Film Festival and the Catalan International Film Festival. In 1999, he gained further recognition as the unhinged inmate “Wild Bill” Wharton in Stephen King’s The Green Mile.
Rockwell went on to appear in a string of notable films: Galaxy Quest (1999), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999), and Charlie’s Angels (2000). His first major leading role was portraying game show host Chuck Barris in George Clooney’s Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002), which earned positive reviews. He followed with performances in Matchstick Men (2003), The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007). Although considered for the role of Tony Stark in Iron Man, he eventually played rival industrialist Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2 (2010).
Throughout his career, Rockwell has balanced mainstream and independent projects, including Snow Angels (2008), Choke (2008), and Duncan Jones’s acclaimed Moon (2009). He continued with roles in Seven Psychopaths (2012), The Way, Way Back (2013), Mr. Right (2015), and voiced characters in video games and animated films like Dishonored 2, Trolls World Tour (2020), The One and Only Ivan (2020), and The Bad Guys (2022, with a sequel in 2025).
His performance as Officer Jason Dixon in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017) earned him widespread acclaim, including an Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Best Supporting Actor. He later portrayed George W. Bush in Vice (2018), which brought him a second Oscar nomination. In 2019, he starred as choreographer Bob Fosse in the miniseries Fosse/Verdon, earning an Emmy nomination, and also appeared in Jojo Rabbit and Richard Jewell. In 2025, he guest-starred in the third season of The White Lotus, receiving praise for a standout monologue.
On stage, Rockwell has long been affiliated with New York’s LAByrinth Theater Company, performing in numerous productions including The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman) and, more recently, returning to Broadway in a revival of David Mamet’s American Buffalo (2022), which earned him a Tony Award nomination.
In his personal life, Rockwell has never married and has expressed no interest in parenthood. Since 2007, he has been in a relationship with actress Leslie Bibb, whom he met while filming Frost/Nixon. The pair have worked together on projects such as Iron Man 2, Don Verdean, and The White Lotus.
