Malaysia Vasudevan, born on June 15, 1944, was a prominent Malaysian-Indian playback singer and actor known for his contributions to Tamil cinema. His journey began as the youngest child of Malayali parents who had migrated to Malaysia in search of a livelihood. Despite his Malayali heritage, Vasudevan grew up surrounded by Tamil language and culture in Malaysia, making Tamil his language of choice both at school and at home. He was born into a musically inclined family, with all his family members, except his mother, being singers. This early exposure to music laid the foundation for his future career in the entertainment industry.
Vasudevan’s entry into the world of music and acting started at a young age. He began performing on stage at the age of eight and later became involved in Tamil drama troupes in Malaysia, both as an actor and a singer. His journey eventually led him to Chennai, where he made his debut in the film industry, acting in “Ratha Paei.” He also lent his voice to a song for the same film. His big break as a playback singer came when he sang “Kaalam Seyyum Vilaiyattu” in the film “Kumasthavin Magal.” It was during this time that he was rechristened as Malaysia Vasudevan by A. P. Nagarajan.
Vasudevan’s career as a playback singer flourished, with him contributing to over 8,000 songs in Tamil and many more in various other South Indian languages. He became closely associated with renowned music director Ilaiyaraaja and sang songs of diverse genres, from soft romantic melodies to sensuous tunes and emotionally charged tracks. His folk songs and songs with a village background made him the voice behind several hit songs for iconic actors like Sivaji Ganesan and Rajinikanth. Vasudevan also acted in nearly 85 films, sharing the screen with prominent actors in the Tamil industry.
Apart from his music and acting career, Malaysia Vasudevan ventured into music direction and direction in the Tamil film industry. He composed music for several films and directed a film titled “Nee Sirithal Deepavali” in 1991. He was also a writer, having authored a book of poems called “Ennam Thondriyathu Ezhutha Thoondiyathu” in 2010. Vasudevan’s legacy continues through his family, with his son Yugendran and daughter Prashanthini making their mark in the industry as playback singers. Malaysia Vasudevan received accolades for his contributions, including the Kalaimamani award from the Tamil Nadu Government and two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards for Best Male Playback. He remained a prominent and beloved figure in Tamil cinema until his passing on February 20, 2011.
