Sabita Devi, a luminary of Hindi cinema’s formative years, graced the silver screen with her talent and charisma from 1914 to 1965. Renowned as one of the leading ladies of Indian cinema’s pioneering era, she shared the spotlight with illustrious contemporaries like Mehtab, Bibbo, Durga Khote, Gohar, Devika Rani, and Seeta Devi. Born into a Jewish family, Sabita Devi adopted her screen name to assimilate into the Hindi film industry, following the footsteps of other Anglo-Indian and Jewish actresses of her time, such as Sulochana (Ruby Myers), Seeta Devi (Renee Smith), Madhuri (Beryl Claessen), and Manorama (Erin Daniels).
Initially associated with British Dominion Films Ltd. in Calcutta, Sabita Devi later transitioned to Bombay, where she became a prominent figure in films produced by Sagar Movietone. Her frequent co-star was Motilal, with whom she shared the screen in several acclaimed productions, including “Dr. Madhurika” (1935) and “Kulvadhu” (1937), directed by Sarvottam Badami. Notably, their collaboration began with “Shaher Ka Jadoo” (1934), which marked Motilal’s debut.
Sabita Devi’s talent and popularity led her to be one of the highest-paid actresses of her time, ranking third after Sulochana and Gohar. She commanded a substantial monthly salary of Rs. 3000 and enjoyed the privilege of having esteemed writers like K. M. Munshi and Ramanlal Vasantlal pen stories for her films. Her projects were characterized by elaborate sets, special rehearsals, and extensive pre-release publicity.
In collaboration with Sarvottam Badami and Ranjit Studios, Sabita Devi ventured into film production with Sudama Pictures, further establishing her influence in the industry. Over the span of 1935 to 1943, she starred in fifteen films, all under Badami’s direction, showcasing her versatility in genres ranging from social dramas to comedies. Films like “Aap Ki Marzi” (1939) and “Ladies Only” (1939) emerged as significant commercial successes, solidifying Sabita Devi’s position as a powerhouse performer and a trailblazer in Indian cinema.
