S. P. Muthuraman was born 1935.
He is a highly successful film director with over 75 movies to his name, primarily in Tamil and Telugu. He holds a unique position as one of the few commercially successful directors in Tamil cinema. Initially collaborating with renowned actors like Sivaji Ganesan, Jaishankar, and Kamal Haasan, Muthuraman’s career took a significant leap in the late 1970s with his partnership with Rajinikanth.
Together, they produced 25 films, shaping Rajinikanth’s screen persona and propelling him to immense commercial success.Muthuraman’s contributions to Tamil cinema have been recognized through two South Zone Filmfare Awards and a Tamil Nadu Government Award for Best Director.
S.P. Muthuraman, born on April 7, 1935, was the second of seven children in a Karaikudi family. Following regional customs, his parents initially named him Rajaram Mohan, a name that fell into disuse with time. His father, Karaikudi Rama Subbaiah, was a prominent figure in the Dravidian Movement and served in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council from 1972 to 1978. Muthuraman’s youngest brother, Suba Veerapandian, is a renowned Dravidian ideologue.
Muthuraman, initially aspiring to be a screenwriter, joined AVM Productions as an assistant editor instead, at Meiyappan’s insistence. He then rose through the ranks as an assistant director, working with renowned filmmakers like Krishnan-Panju, Bhimsingh, Yoganand, Kanagal, Nair, and Tirulokchandar.
He got married in 1957, they have 3 childern. His wife Kamala died on 15 October 1992.
