Roman Polanski

Biography:

Roman Polanski is a Polish-French film director, screenwriter, producer and actor whose career has covered both European and American cinema. He was born in Paris, France on August 18, 1933 and raised in Poland, making movies in Poland where he gained international recognition with his first full-length movie Knife in the Water (1962), winning a nomination for the Best Foreign Language Film in an Academy Award. Some of the other famous works done by him are Repulsion (1965), Rosemary’s Baby (1968), Chinatown (1974), and Tess (1979). Roman Polanski is known for his works dealing with themes such as psychological horror, suspense, noir, and issues of paranoia, isolation and morality.

In addition to receiving numerous nominations in Academy Awards, Roman Polanski received the Oscar for Best Director for his movie The Pianist in the year 2002. The movie The Pianist won Polanski international recognition for depicting Władysław Szpilman, the pianist and the Holocaust survivor. Other famous works of his are The Tenant (1976), Frantic (1988), Bitter Moon (1992), The Ninth Gate (1999), and The Ghost Writer (2010). The career of Roman Polanski has also been hugely affected by controversies related to law and sexual abuse, like his arrest in United States in 1977 after which he fled from the country.
