Rekha, also recognized by the name Akshara, is an esteemed Indian actress primarily active in Kannada cinema, with occasional appearances in Telugu and Tamil films as well. Her journey into the film industry commenced while she was engaged in modeling, marking her acting debut in the 2001 Kannada film “Chitra.” Since then, she has graced the screens in over 30 films across various South Indian languages.
Born and raised in Bangalore, Karnataka, Rekha received her education at the Basava Residential Girls School in Kengeri. While pursuing a BBA correspondence course from the University of Madras, she simultaneously explored modeling and nurtured aspirations for an acting career. Her breakthrough occurred when Jayashree Devi cast her in the college drama “Chithra,” produced by Ramoji Rao.
In this film, she portrayed the role of an NRI student. The same year marked her participation in the blockbuster “Huchcha” alongside Sudeep, and she ventured into Telugu cinema with Sreenu Vaitla’s “Anandam,” both proving to be commercial successes. Her Tamil debut came with Sabapathy’s love triangle-based film “Punnagai Poove.” In 2003, Rekha had her inaugural and, to date, only Hindi release, “Mudda,” featuring Arya Babbar, and assumed a supporting role in the female-centric “Three Roses,” starring Rambha, Jyothika, and Laila Mehdin.
Collaborating with Ganesh in his first feature film appearance, she achieved success with “Chellata” and later in “Hudugaata” the following year. Subsequent releases in that period failed at the box office, prompting her to participate in the bilingual “Ninna Nedu Repu / Netru Indru Naalai” and Ramesh Arvind’s directorial “Accident,” which garnered critical acclaim.
She also made special appearances in “Mast Maja Maadi,” “Raaj The Showman,” and “Yogi.” In 2010, Rekha had a solitary release, “Appu and Pappu,” followed by her most recent film, “Boss,” where she was paired with Darshan once again. Presently, she is engrossed in various ongoing projects such as “Prema Chandramama,” “Jolly Boy” alongside Diganth, directed by Sabapathy again, and “Thulasi”.
Beyond her cinematic endeavors, Rekha has demonstrated versatility and resilience, making her a prominent figure in the diverse landscape of Indian cinema. Her ability to effortlessly transition between languages and genres speaks volumes about her dedication and passion for the art of acting.
