Ramana is an Indian film director known for his work in Tamil cinema. He made his directorial debut in 2003 with the successful film “Thirumalai.” Despite his initial struggles to secure funding for his off-beat film scripts, he eventually shifted his focus towards making commercially viable films in the masala genre before exploring more serious subjects.
His first major success came with “Thirumalai” (2003), an action-masala film starring Vijay, which performed well at the box office. Ramana briefly began work on a project titled “Parthasarathy” with Vijayakanth but had to shelve it. He then directed “Sullan” (2004), featuring Dhanush in the lead, which did not fare well commercially. His next venture, “Aathi” (2006), marked his second collaboration with Vijay and had a strong opening but turned out to be a commercial failure, resulting in a significant financial loss.
In 2007, Ramana worked on potential projects in Telugu and Tamil cinema but faced setbacks, and he even briefly ventured into acting. Unfortunately, health issues arose in 2011 when he was diagnosed with throat cancer, leading to a temporary hiatus from filmmaking. He later recovered from the disease but lost his voice permanently during the recovery process in 2013.
