Ralph Michael Ineson was born in York on December 15, 1969. He attended Woodleigh School and Pocklington School, later studying theatre at Lancaster University’s Furness College. During his time there, he lived in Lancaster, worked security at The Dukes Theatre, and assisted in open-air Shakespeare performances in Williamson Park. After graduating in the early 1990s, Ineson worked as a teacher and cricket coach at York Sixth Form College.
His early film appearances included First Knight, From Hell, Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll, and The Damned United. He gained wider recognition for playing Death Eater Amycus Carrow in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and both parts of The Deathly Hallows. Ineson also appeared in Cass (2008) as Sergeant Mullins and had small roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014).
In 2016, he starred opposite Anya Taylor-Joy and Kate Dickie in Robert Eggers’ acclaimed film The Witch, which Ineson described as a career-defining role. He credited Eggers and the film with boosting his confidence and leading to future collaborations with directors like Steven Spielberg and the Coen brothers.
Ineson had a brief appearance as a First Order officer in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), although much of his performance was cut. Between 2018 and 2024, he featured in major films including Ready Player One, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, The Green Knight (as the Green Knight), The Tragedy of Macbeth, The Northman, Catherine Called Birdy, To Catch a Killer, The Creator, and Nosferatu.
In 2025, he portrayed the cosmic supervillain Galactus in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, a role offered to him without an audition. Ineson described preparing for the role as both mentally and physically demanding, explaining that he studied tall buildings to visualize Galactus’ immense perspective.
Beyond film, Ineson has appeared in numerous British TV productions, including The Office (as Chris Finch), Goodnight Sweetheart, Coronation Street, Spooks, Playing the Field, This Life, Suburban Shootout, Waking the Dead, Game of Thrones (as Dagmer Cleftjaw), Waterloo Road, The IT Crowd, Titanic (ITV miniseries), Peaky Blinders, Chernobyl, and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance.
Known for his deep Yorkshire voice, Ineson has narrated several television series such as Licence to Drill, Salvage Hunters, Inside Gatwick, Claimed and Shamed, Skint, Countryside 999, and Gears and Tears. He also voiced Gunvald Larsson in the BBC radio adaptations of The Martin Beck Killings.
His voice work extends to video games, where he has portrayed characters such as Charles Vane in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Lorath Nahr in Diablo IV, and Cidolfus Telamon in Final Fantasy XVI. He is also the voice introducing the Leeds United FC podcast The Square Ball and voiced a talking barbecue in a 2024 advertisement for Prostate Cancer UK.
Ineson married Ali Milner in 2003, and they have two children, including actress Rebecca Ineson. In December 2023, he filed a lawsuit against Disney, alleging permanent shoulder injuries sustained while filming the Disney+ series Willow.
