Actor and film director Praveen Gandhi, sometimes known as Praveenkanth, is from India and is well-known for his work in Tamil cinema. Producer K. T. Kunjumon initially gave Praveen Gandhi the chance to make movies with Ratchagan (1997), stating that he noticed “a young man who is very talented and full of ideas who was willing to work hard” in the filmmaker.
The film was first announced in January 1996, but production didn’t start until January 1997. The cast and crew included Telugu actor Nagarjuna, Miss Universe winner Sushmita Sen, Girish Karnad, and A. R. Rahman from the established cast.
The movie was filmed in many parts of India, including Manali, Mumbai, Goa, Ooty, Rajasthan, and Delhi. During the filming process, Kunjumon declared that the movie will end up being the most expensive production in India.
In 1999, Praveen Gandhi made a comeback with the romance picture Jodi, which starred Simran and Prashanth. Having previously been known as Praveen Gandhi, he released the movie under his original name, Praveenkanth.
In the movie, the director also made a brief appearance as a young person on the verge of elopement who helps Prashanth. A reviewer observed that “the director’s light-veined screenplay keeps the movie moving at a good pace” as the movie debuted to favorable reviews and did well at the box office.
Praveen Gandhi thought about casting Ajith Kumar and Aishwarya Rai in a movie called Apoorvan in 2000, but the project never went forward. Due to Jodi’s success, the filmmaker teamed up with Prashanth and Simran once more on a project named Star (2001).
However, Simran left the project early, and the movie didn’t have the same level of success as Jodi. Praveen Gandhi, who played a supporting role throughout the entire movie, received harsh criticism for both his direction and acting, with one critic calling the writing “ruinously shoddy” and saying “the director’s attempt to enter the acting arena, and play one of the crucial characters in the film adds insult to injury.”
Another critic said that “the messy screenplay in the second half ruins the story that admittedly has enough potential for romance, laughs, sentiments and action” .He started filming Thullal in 2003, a movie in which he would play the lead role. Although the movie was announced with great enthusiasm, its theatrical premiere was postponed.
After all, the movie received overwhelmingly negative reviews when it debuted in July 2007. One critic called the movie “torture” and said the director had a “misplaced sense of self importance in his very first film as a hero”.
He announced two further acting projects, Muktha and Vilasam TN 03 6999, despite the movie’s failure; however, neither project was finished or published. Adayalam with Ragini, another 2009-planned film project, too never came to be.
