Biography:

Prashant Nair is an accomplished Indian film director, screenwriter, and producer, best known for his 2015 feature film “Umrika,” starring Suraj Sharma and Tony Revolori. The film made waves by winning the World Cinema Dramatic Audience Award at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Nair’s most recent work, “Tryst With Destiny,” premiered at the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival and earned him the Best Screenplay in an International Narrative award.

Nair’s upbringing was marked by a unique blend of cultural exposure, as he was born in Chandigarh, India, to diplomat parents but grew up in various parts of the world, including Europe, Africa, and Asia. He later lived and worked in cosmopolitan cities like New York, Paris, Prague, Berlin, and Mumbai. This multicultural background deeply influences the themes of his films. Fluent in English, French, and Hindi, and with knowledge of Italian, German, and Arabic, Nair’s diverse linguistic skills and global experiences have enriched his storytelling.

Nair’s journey into filmmaking began in the late 2010s, transitioning from his career as a social media entrepreneur. His debut feature, “Delhi In A Day,” was a micro-budget project that served as his film school. Despite its modest beginnings, the film received critical acclaim and was voted one of the top ten independent films of the year by the Times of India. Nair’s work, including “Umrika,” explores themes of cultural perceptions, stereotypes, and the notion of the “exotic,” shedding light on how different cultures perceive each other. His dedication to storytelling continues with his upcoming adaptation of the non-fiction book “Trial by Fire” as a web-series, recounting a tragic event and the battle for justice waged by its survivors.
