Peter Billingsley (born April 16, 1971), also credited as Peter Michaelsen and Peter Billingsley-Michaelsen, is an American actor, director, and producer. He is most widely recognized for his iconic role as Ralphie Parker in A Christmas Story and its sequel A Christmas Story Christmas. His other early roles include Jack Simmons in The Dirt Bike Kid, Billy in Death Valley, and the character “Messy Marvin” in a series of Hershey’s Syrup commercials during the 1980s. Billingsley began his career as a baby, appearing in TV commercials.
Born in New York City, Billingsley is the son of financial consultant Alwin Michaelsen and his wife Gail, who was once his secretary. Gail was the niece of Sherman Billingsley, owner of the famous Stork Club, and cousin of Glenn Billingsley, who was married to actress Barbara Billingsley. All five Michaelsen children pursued acting when they were young: Peter’s siblings Dina and Win worked briefly in commercials and guest TV spots, Melissa starred in the series Me and Maxx, and Neil played Danny Walton on the soap opera Search for Tomorrow.
Billingsley was educated through a mix of tutors, private schools, and public institutions, including Professional Children’s School in New York City, Phoenix Country Day School, and Longview Elementary in Phoenix. At 14, he passed the California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE). He also attended Arcadia High School in Phoenix prior to earning that credential. In 1986, as a youth spokesman for the Young Astronaut Program, he was present at Kennedy Space Center during the Challenger shuttle disaster.
His acting debut came at age 2 in a 1973 Geritol commercial. By the early 1980s, he had appeared in over 100 advertisements, most famously the Hershey’s “Messy Marvin” campaign. His early film roles included If Ever I See You Again (1978), Paternity (1981), Honky Tonk Freeway (1981), and Death Valley (1982). He also guest-starred on Little House on the Prairie and co-hosted NBC’s Real People, which earned him a Young Artist Award nomination.
In 1983, Billingsley starred in A Christmas Story, adapted from Jean Shepherd’s In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash. Though modest at release, the film became a beloved holiday classic, airing annually in 24-hour marathons on TBS and TNT. He reprised his role nearly 40 years later in A Christmas Story Christmas (2022). He continued working through the 1980s with roles in The Hoboken Chicken Emergency, The Dirt Bike Kid (for which he won a Young Artist Award), Russkies, and Beverly Hills Brats.
As he transitioned into his teen years, Billingsley tackled more mature roles, including a steroid-abusing athlete in the CBS Schoolbreak Special The Fourth Man, and later appeared in The Writing on the Wall (1994), which earned him an Emmy nomination. In the 1990s, he increasingly worked behind the camera, using the name Peter Michaelsen on projects like Knights and Arcade (1993). He also directed the award-winning short film The Sacred Fire (1994).
Behind the scenes, Billingsley built a strong career as a producer and director. He contributed to Elf (2003), Made (2001), Zathura (2005), and The Break-Up (2006). He was an executive producer for Iron Man (2008), also appearing onscreen as scientist William Ginter Riva, a role he reprised in Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). As a director, he helmed Couples Retreat (2009) and Term Life (2016).
Outside of film and television, Billingsley co-produced a stage musical version of A Christmas Story (2010) and released a holiday CD, Christmas Stories… Christmas Songs (1999), with his friend Brian Evans.
Billingsley married Elizabeth “Buffy” Bains in 2015, and the couple has two children.
