Neal McDonough
Biography:
Neal McDonough was born on February 13, 1966, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, to Irish immigrants Catherine (née Bushe) from County Tipperary and Frank McDonough from County Galway, who ran a motel. He grew up in Barnstable, Massachusetts, in a Catholic household. As a child, his brothers nicknamed him “Headster,” teasing him about the size of his head. He attended Barnstable High School before enrolling at Syracuse University, where he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1988. Although he received several baseball scholarships, McDonough chose Syracuse for its strong theater program. He later trained in classical theatre at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
In 1991, he won a Dramalogue Award for Best Actor for Away Alone. From there, he built a wide-ranging career in film and television, appearing in Band of Brothers, Boomtown, Star Trek: First Contact, Minority Report, and The Hitcher. He starred as Dave Williams in season five of Desperate Housewives and led the cast of the medical drama Medical Investigation (2004). In 1996, he voiced Bruce Banner in the animated series The Incredible Hulk and reprised the role in the 2005 video game The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction.
McDonough was originally cast in the ABC series Scoundrels but was dismissed after refusing to perform sex scenes, citing his Catholic faith and loyalty to his family. His religious convictions also guided his work voicing Jesus in The Truth & Life Dramatized Audio New Testament Bible.
In 2011, he appeared as Timothy “Dum Dum” Dugan in Captain America: The First Avenger and reprised the role in the video game Captain America: Super Soldier and later in Agent Carter (2013 short and 2015 TV series), Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2014), and What If…? (2021). He also gained notice for his recurring role as villain Robert Quarles in season three of Justified (2012) and as Police Chief Parker in Frank Darabont’s Mob City.
He appeared in a high-profile Cadillac ELR “Poolside” commercial during NBC’s broadcast of the 2014 Winter Olympics. In 2015, he was cast as the DC Comics villain Damien Darhk on Arrow, a role that extended across multiple DC television series.
More recent roles include portraying President Dwight D. Eisenhower in American Horror Story: Double Feature (2021) and Dr. William Birkin in Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021). He has also appeared in The 100 as Anders. In 2022, he was a guest artist and narrator for the Tabernacle Choir’s annual Christmas Program.
Known for his versatility, McDonough has built a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most recognizable “villain” character actors, with a career spanning live-action, animation, and video games.
Personally, McDonough is a devout Catholic and a Republican. He married South African model Ruvé Robertson in 2003, whom he met while filming Band of Brothers in the UK. The couple has five children. He has publicly stated that he avoids sex scenes and kissing co-stars out of respect for his wife and his religious beliefs—a choice that led to his dismissal from Scoundrels.
