Murugan Martin, born in Periyam Kulam, Theni, Tamil Nadu, has a remarkable journey that highlights his determination and resilience. Born into poverty and weary of the hardships of slave labor, he migrated to Kerala in his youth to work as a child laborer. His early years were spent in various menial jobs, from collecting and selling bottles to herding buffaloes and even selling black market tickets. It was during this time, while gathering resources with a pushcart, that fate intervened and led him to the film industry.
One day, while passing by a film shoot near Kaloor, Murugan stumbled upon a scene being filmed for the movie Irikku M.D. Akathundu, where an actor named Zainuddin was being attacked for speaking to a woman. Amidst the chaos, someone from the crowd stopped him, and this serendipitous moment marked the beginning of Murugan’s career in films. He first appeared as a junior artist in several movies, including Sahayatthika Sanehapurvam and Uthaman, gradually gaining experience and recognition in the industry.
Murugan’s breakthrough came with the movie Freedom, directed by Thampi Kannanthanam, where he played a pivotal role as a thief. This role was significant in shaping the plot and brought him considerable attention. During the filming of Freedom, he crossed paths with Mahi, the costume designer, who introduced him to tailoring. Murugan began assisting her as a costume designer in nearly ten films, contributing to the wardrobe design for renowned actors like Mohanlal in films such as Alibhai, China Town, and Madambi.
After his success in Freedom, Murugan took on another notable role in the film Kotation, directed by Vinod Vijayan, where he played a goon in the gang of leader I.M. Vijayan. He continued to land small but significant roles in films like Annayum Rasoolum, Big B, Hotel California, and Konthayum Poonoolum.
However, it was his role in KL-10 Pathu, directed by Muhsil Parari, that truly brought him into the spotlight. Portraying a character from Kannur, Murugan’s performance as a “buddhijeevi sakhavan” (intellectual companion) gained widespread praise. This success opened doors for Murugan, leading to more prominent roles. He soon secured parts in successful films like Kali, where he played a character named Supplier, Angamaly Diaries as Gunman Abu, and Kammara Sambhavam as Murukesan.
Murugan Martin’s career is a testament to perseverance and the power of seizing unexpected opportunities. From humble beginnings to becoming a well-known figure in the Malayalam film industry, Murugan’s journey is an inspiring tale of overcoming adversity and finding success through hard work and dedication.
