The Austin band S U R V I V E, which includes Emmy-winning and Grammy-nominated Michael Stein and his partner Kyle Dixon, is responsible for the soundtrack of the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” which became the largest pop culture success of 2016. The nostalgic tribute to the time when Carpenter and Spielberg were the genre’s tastemakers was made more appealing by the pair’s surreal, retro soundtrack. The band’s records, which transform vintage synths into a decidedly contemporary sound, won the Duffer Brothers, the show’s producers, an Emmy Award for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music. The outcome of this alchemy was the year’s most talked-about soundtrack.
A World Soundtrack Award nomination for TV Composer(s) of the Year, two Grammy nominations for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, and an ASCAP Composers’ Choice Award nomination for TV Composer(s) of the Year were all received. 2017 saw the pair finish Stranger Things 2, and according to Pitchfork, “while staying true to the series’ airtight aesthetic, Dixon and Stein continue to find ways to push beyond.” The series’ third season is currently in development.
