The daughter of Indian actress Neena Gupta and former West Indies cricketer Viv Richards, Masaba Gupta was born in 1988 and raised in Mumbai. Her mother reared her when the family relocated from New Delhi to Mumbai, and her parents never got married. Gupta reconnected with her father on her 20th birthday, and the two now have a close relationship after she found a father figure in her late maternal grandfather.
She began practicing to become a tennis player at the age of eight, but she stopped at sixteen. Gupta, who was passionate in music and dance, wanted to join Shiamak Davar’s dance group but decided against it after her mother dissuaded her. After that, she enrolled in a music and dance course in London, but she left because she was lonely and homesick.
She eventually enrolled at SNDT Women’s University’s Premlila Vithaldas Polytechnic. According to Gupta, she experienced racism from other classmates during her time in school.
