Biography:

Manjula Vijayakumar (4 July 1954 – 23 July 2013) was a renowned Indian actress whose illustrious career spanned over four decades, during which she left an indelible mark on the South Indian film industry. Born on July 4, 1954, she ventured into acting at a young age, making her initial appearance in the film “Shanthi Nilayam” (1969) in a supporting role, portraying the teenage niece of Gemini Ganesan’s character.

Her cinematic journey took a significant turn with her lead role in “Rickshawkaran” (1971), marking the beginning of her prominence in the industry. Over the years, Manjula demonstrated her versatility by essaying lead roles in numerous films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam languages. Her performances were well-received, and she shared the screen with legendary actors such as Sivaji Ganesan, Gemini Ganesan, M.G. Ramachandran, Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Krishna, Shobhan Babu, Kamal Haasan, Vishnuvardhan, and Rajinikanth.

In 1976, Manjula entered a new chapter in her personal life by marrying actor Vijayakumar. The couple had three daughters named Vanitha, Preetha, and Sridevi. Additionally, Manjula became part of a blended family, with Vijayakumar’s children from his previous marriage, namely Arun Vijay, Anitha, and Kavitha. Sanjeev and Sindhu, her nephew and niece, were also integral members of her extended family.

While she initially played lead roles, Manjula gracefully transitioned to supporting characters in the late ’80s, showcasing her acting prowess across different genres. Her cinematic journey included collaborations with notable directors and actors, contributing to the success of numerous films. Manjula’s influence on the South Indian film industry endures, and her legacy lives on through her contributions to over 100 films. Unfortunately, the esteemed actress passed away on July 23, 2013, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be celebrated by fans and the film fraternity alike.
