Manav Kaul, is a multifaceted Indian artist known for his work as a theatre director, playwright, author, actor, and filmmaker. He received nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performances in the films Tumhari Sulu (2017) and Saina (2021).
In 2004, he founded the theatre group Aranya, drawing inspiration from literary figures such as Charles Bukowski, Vinod Kumar Shukla, and Nirmal Verma, paying homage to them in his play Red Sparrow (2010).
Kaul has written and directed 13 plays, including notable works like Ilhaam, Park, and Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane, which marked his debut as a playwright and director. His play Shakkar Ke Paanch Daane (2004), a dramatic monologue in Hindi, garnered acclaim for its exploration of a small-town individual’s existential crisis, featuring actor Kumud Mishra, a frequent collaborator.
In subsequent plays like Peele Scooter Wala Aadmi (2006), Kaul delved into themes of familial relationships and poetic dialogue, earning him recognition with awards like the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Award for Best Script. His diverse repertoire includes works like Bali aur Shambhu (2006), a poignant reflection on old age, and adaptations such as Jean-Paul Sartre’s Huis Clos, showcasing his versatility as a director.
In 2012, Kaul ventured into filmmaking with Hansa, a film he directed and wrote the screenplay for. He made his acting debut in Hindi cinema with Jajantaram Mamantaram (2003) and received acclaim for his portrayal of a right-wing politician in Kai Po Che! (2013).
Beyond his contributions to theatre and cinema, Kaul is also an accomplished writer, exploring themes of isolation, nostalgia, and rootlessness in his books such as Chalta Phirta Pret, Antima, Bahut Door Kitna Door Hota hai, and Theek Tumhare Peeche. His recently published novel Rooh delves into his personal journey reconnecting with his homeland, Kashmir. Additionally, his book Patjhad was released in November 2023.
Born on 19 December 1976 in Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir, India, into a Kashmiri Pandit family, His family later moved to Hoshangabad, Madhya Pradesh, where he was raised. During his late teenage years, Kaul pursued competitive swimming, achieving success at state and national levels with 14 national medals.
