Kim Young-ok (Korean: 김영옥; born January 6, 1938) is a veteran South Korean actress who has been an active figure in the entertainment industry since her debut in 1957. Widely recognized as South Korea’s “National Grandma,” she has played numerous grandmother roles in both films and television dramas, earning her a beloved status among audiences.
Her career began in 1959 when she joined the Chuncheon Broadcasting Station as an announcer through open recruitment. In 1960, she transitioned to voice acting at CBS Christian Broadcasting Company, and by 1961, she officially debuted as a voice actor for MBC Cultural Broadcasting’s first round. Her journey into television acting started in 1969 with her first appearance in an MBC TV drama.
Kim Young-ok’s illustrious career spans decades, making her one of the most enduring and respected actresses in South Korea. Notably, she has never taken a hiatus since her debut, and as of today, she holds the distinction of being the oldest active actress in Korea, continuing to captivate audiences with her performances.
