Kathryn Ann Bigelow is an American film director, producer, and screenwriter who was born on November 27, 1951. She has received a Primetime Emmy Award, two Academy Awards, and two BAFTA Awards. In 2010, Time magazine listed her as one of the world’s 100 most influential people.
The Loveless, an outlaw motorcycle movie, was Bigelow’s first directorial effort (1981). She became well-known as the director of the thrillers K-19: The Widowmaker (2002), Strange Days (1995), Point Break (1991), Blue Steel (1990), and Near Dark (1987). Bigelow became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for her work directing the 2008 military film The Hurt Locker. Since then, she has directed the crime drama Detroit (2017) and the spy thriller Zero Dark Thirty (2012).
Her work on the Netflix movie Cartel Land (2015) earned her the Primetime Emmy Award for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking, and she directed episodes of the NBC series Homicide: Life on the Street (1998–1999). She is well-known for working with Mark Boal and Eric Red.
