At 14, driven by a passion for music, Kher left home to seek formal musical training. Despite challenges in finding a guru or institution, he immersed himself in classical and folk music studies, absorbing the works of renowned singers like Pandit Kumar Gandharv and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. To sustain himself, he taught music classes, managing his expenses independently.
In 2001, Kailash Kher ventured to Mumbai, the hub of India’s music industry, to pursue a career as a professional singer. Initially facing hardships, he lived in modest accommodations, taking up any musical opportunities to make ends meet. Despite the challenges, his dedication and talent eventually led to his breakthrough in the competitive music scene, marking the beginning of his illustrious journey as a renowned singer and musician.
