Biography:

K. R. Sunil (born 1975) is a distinguished Indian documentary photographer, visual artist, and writer from Kerala, known for his evocative, ethnographic portrayals of marginalized lives and landscapes under environmental and social stress. Blending art and activism, Sunil’s work reflects a deep commitment to documenting the nuanced realities of everyday people, often overlooked in mainstream narratives.

Hailing from Kodungallur, Kerala, Sunil began his artistic journey with a bachelor’s degree in sculpture from the College of Fine Arts, Thrissur. It was during this period that he discovered a profound passion for photography, nurtured by his friend and photographer Krishna Kumar. Sunil’s early photographic inspirations were drawn from the pages of National Geographic, which he credits as his “bible.” His approach is largely self-taught, relying heavily on observation and immersion, rather than formal training in the technical aspects of photography.

Sunil’s photographic oeuvre is marked by a strong ethnographic sensitivity and a socially conscious lens. He documents subjects with investigative precision, often exploring themes like the sea, climate change, maritime history, and the lived realities of coastal and marginalized communities.
