K. Jamuna Rani, born on May 17, 1938, in Andhra Pradesh, India, is a prolific Indian playback singer celebrated for her contributions to Telugu, Sinhalese, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam languages. With a remarkable career spanning over several decades, she has lent her voice to over 6,000 songs.
Jamuna Rani, born to K. Varadarajulu and violinist K. Droupathy, embarked on her musical journey at a tender age. At seven, she made her debut in the Telugu movie “Tyagayya” (1946). By the age of thirteen, she was already voicing lead characters in films like “Valayapathi” and “Kalyani.” Her notable success came with the hit score for “Aasaiyum En Nesamum” from the Tamil film “Gulebakavali” in 1955.
The versatile Jamuna Rani extended her talent to Sri Lankan cinema, contributing her vocals to films such as “Sujatha” (1953), “Warada Kageda” (1954), “Seda Sulang” (1955), “Mathalan” (1955), “Suraya” (1957), and “Vana Mohini” (1958). Her collaboration with A. M. Rajah on the song “Jeevana Mea Gamana Sansare” for the movie “Seda Sulang” remains a timeless favorite in Sinhala cinema.
After a brief hiatus, Jamuna Rani returned to Tamil songs in films like “Nayakan” (1987) and “Annan Ennada Thambi Ennada” (1992). Her illustrious career includes contributions to films like “Pasamalar,” “Tamil,” “Mooga Manusulu,” and many others in the 50s and 60s.
Jamuna Rani collaborated with a plethora of renowned music composers, including G. Ramanathan, K. V. Mahadevan, S. Dakshinamurthi, Ananda Samarakoon, Viswanathan–Ramamoorthy, Ilaiyaraaja, and Chandrabose.
She shared the stage with prominent playback singers like T. M. Soundararajan, A. M. Rajah, Seerkazhi Govindarajan, A. L. Raghavan, P. B. Sreenivas, Mohideen Baig, P. Suseela, P. Leela, L. R.
