Biography:
John Ford is one of the most famous and influential American directors and producers, known as one of the greatest filmmakers in the entire history of cinema. John Martin Feeney, which he later changed to John Ford, was born on February 1, 1894, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Starting his career in the silent-film period, Ford directed more than 140 films during the course of his more than five decades-long career. He became especially popular for his Western films and collaboration with John Wayne and Henry Fonda. Some of his most popular films include Stagecoach (1939), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), The Quiet Man (1952), The Searchers (1956), and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962).
The movies of John Ford brought him four Academy Awards for Best Director for The Informer (1935), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), How Green Was My Valley (1941), and The Quiet Man (1952). Thus, he is the most decorated director by the number of wins in the mentioned category. In addition, the pictures created by John Ford were known for impressive compositions, usage of landscapes, complicated depiction of American identity, and the themes of community, honor, family, and exile. While he was famous mainly for his Western films, Ford created great dramas, war pictures, and adaptations of literary works as well. He died on August 31, 1973, in Palm Desert, California.
