Joely Kim Richardson was born into the theatrical Redgrave family in Marylebone, London. She is the granddaughter of performers Sir Michael Redgrave (1908–1985) and Rachel Kempson, Lady Redgrave (1910–2003), and the daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson (1928–1991). Her brother-in-law is actor Liam Neeson, and her sister was actress Natasha Richardson (1963–2009). She is the niece of Lynn Redgrave (1943–2010) and Corin Redgrave (1939–2010), the cousin of Jemma Redgrave (five days younger than Richardson), and the aunt of Michael Richardson and Daniel Neeson.
