Kaplan was raised in La Cañada Flintridge, California, after being born in New Jersey on November 4, 1972. Kaplan had played video games a lot in school, especially the many Infocom adventure games, but he never imagined he would be able to work in the video game industry because he didn’t know how to program. At the University of Southern California, he eventually earned a degree in creative writing after initially pursuing a degree in film. He chose to pursue a graduate degree in creative writing at New York University after serving as a writing intern for Universal Pictures. For numerous years, he was unable to get any of his imaginative stories published; in one year, he received over 170 rejection notices.
