Jaya Krishna Gummadi

Biography:

Indian cinematographer Jaya Krishna Gummadi was born in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, and has experience in Telugu and Malayalam film. He is not connected to Gummadi Venkateswara Rao, although coming from the same village. In recognition of his short film When This Man Dies, Gummadi won the 56th National Film Awards’ Best Non-Feature Film Cinematography title. At the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, the critics jury prize went to his diploma film Vadhakramam.

Gummadi’s dream of becoming a cinematographer began in his tenth grade, when he was inspired by the amazing cinematography in the 1989 film Geethanjali.

He spent two years working as the renowned cinematographer Sameer Reddy’s assistant after receiving his degree in photography from JNTU. He graduated with a degree in motion picture photography from the Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India in 2004. His dialogue film, which he shot while a student at FTII, won the national Kodak Film School award for best cinematography.

He returned to Hyderabad after receiving his degree from FTII in order to work as a cinematographer on the Telugu film Mr. & Mrs. Sailaja Krishnamurthy. The 2009 Malayalam thriller Winter, starring Jayaram, came next. Okkadunnadu was released in 2007. He received credit for the 2008 film Idhi Sangathi, which starred Tabu and Abbas.

The film was noted for being shot on HD (High definition/viper camera). He has also been associated with a couple of short films. The most prominent being 22 Minutes, directed by renowned music director, R.P. Patnaik, and I am Famous, directed by R. Hanumantha Rao.

In 2010, his significant contribution in Cinematography to a Marathi feature film Vihir won Best Cinematography Award in Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Australia.
