Jay was inherently passionate and inquisitive as a child growing up in Baroda, India. He decided to try his hand at everything and learn the ropes as a set PA after majoring in aesthetics and art history. He gained the necessary foundation by spending so much time on site, and he discovered that he enjoyed utilizing the camera to convey stories. He then went on to work as a production assistant for a reality series and as an assistant director on movies. Due to his lack of a film degree, Jay had obstacles when attempting to get into the camera department after realizing he had a natural aptitude for cinematography.
This led him to enroll in film school in order to acquire the necessary technical knowledge. Jay returned to India after earning his degree in film from Prague Film School, where he quickly secured employment as an assistant director on multiple movies alongside Ayananke Bose and Shudeep Chatterjee.
On the Dewarist film sets, Jay made his feature film debut as an independent cinematographer. Since then, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work in the field for nine years and develop a career conveying important stories. Jay’s films have garnered critical praise, including Raman Raghav 2.0, Blackmail, Made in Heaven, Ghoul, and most recently Gully Boy. The release of Toofan for Rakeysh Om Prakash Mehra is scheduled for May 2021.
