James Cagney

Biography:

James Cagney was a famous American actor and dancer known for his dynamic and unique style of performance and portrayal of defiant and tough characters. James was born on July 17, 1899, in New York City and started performing in vaudeville and Broadway shows before becoming a film star. Cagney gained wide recognition due to his part in the movie The Public Enemy (1931), where he played a role of gangster Tom Powers and became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. He proved his acting versatility in films such as Angels with Dirty Faces (1938), Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), White Heat (1949), and Mister Roberts (1955).

Cagney received his only Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of entertainer George M. Cohan in the movie Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). In addition, the actor was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Angels with Dirty Faces, but he was especially noted for his ability to switch from one genre of movie to another successfully. The role of Cody Jarrett in the movie White Heat is considered one of the best portrayals of American criminal movies. James Cagney stopped his acting career in the 1960s and came back only once in the movie Ragtime (1981). Moreover, he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award in 1974 for his contribution to filmmaking.
