American actor Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal born December 19, 1980 has over thirty years of experience on theatre and cinema. He was born into the Gyllenhaal family; he is the younger brother of actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and the son of author Naomi Foner and director Stephen Gyllenhaal. His first acting roles were in City Slickers (1991), and he went on to appear in his father’s films A Dangerous Woman (1993) and Homegrown (1998). In the 1999 biography October Sky, he played Homer Hickam, and in the 2001 thriller Donnie Darko, he played a disturbed adolescent. Gyllenhaal made the transition to high-profile films by starring in the 2004 catastrophe movie The Day After Tomorrow.
Gyllenhaal was nominated for an Academy Award and won a BAFTA Award for his role as Jack Twist in Ang Lee’s love thriller Brokeback Mountain, released in 2005. His leading parts in the romantic comedy Love & Other Drugs (2010), the science fiction movie Source Code (2011), and the thriller Zodiac (2007) advanced his career.
