Biography:
Gene Hackman was an award-winning American actor whose talent lay in portraying versatile characters in crime dramas, thrillers, action movies, and character pieces. Hackman was born on January 30, 1930, in San Bernardino, California. His acting career began with theatre performances before he rose to fame in Hollywood.
Hackman’s breakthrough came after starring in the movie Bonnie and Clyde (1967) where he played Buck Barrow and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars. Some of his other great performances include The French Connection (1971), The Conversation (1974), Superman (1978), Hoosiers (1986), and Mississippi Burning (1988).Hackman was awarded the Academy Award for Best Actor for playing the character of Detective Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle in The French Connection and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Unforgiven (1992). Some of the other movies that came later include The Firm (1993), The Quick and the Dead (1995), Enemy of the State (1998), and The Royal Tenenbaums (2001).
Throughout a four-decade-long career, Gene Hackman was nominated for the Academy Award five times and won two times. Besides the Oscars, he had also received Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards. In the early 2000s, Hackman retired from acting. He passed away on or around February 18, 2025, aged 95 (later, his body was found on February 26, 2025).
