David Strathairn
Biography:
David Russell Strathairn is an American actor who was born on January 26, 1949. John Dos Passos, William H. Seward, Edward R. Murrow, and J. Robert Oppenheimer are just a few of the historical personalities he has frequently represented. He is well-known for his main roles on theater and screen. In addition to being nominated for an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, two Golden Globes, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards, he has won honors such as an Independent Spirit Award, a Primetime Emmy Award, and a Volpi Cup.
Return of the Secaucus 7 (1980), a film directed by fellow Williams College alumni John Sayles, marked Strathairn’s acting debut. He went on to appear in Sayles’ films Matewan (1987), Eight Men Out (1988), City of Hope (1991), Passion Fish (1992), and Limbo (1999). He starred in box office hits in the 1990s, such as A League of Their Own (1992), Sneakers (1992), The Firm (1993), The River Wild (1995), and L.A. Confidential (1997), before becoming well-known for playing journalist Edward R. Murrow in George Clooney’s Good Night and Good Luck (2005), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. In The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) and The Bourne Legacy (2012), he played CIA DeputyDirector Noah Vosen.
He is also well-known for his television work; in 1984, he debuted in the soap opera Search for Tomorrow. In the 2004 drama series The Sopranos on HBO, he played Robert Wegler. For his role in the 2010 HBO television movie Temple Grandin, he was nominated for a Golden Globe and won a Primetime Emmy. In the 2012 HBO movie Hemingway & Gellhorn, he played John Dos Passos. The Syfy series Alphas (2011–2012), the NBC series The Blacklist (2015–2016), the Showtime series Billions (2017–2019), and the SyFy, then Amazon Prime Video, series The Expanse (2018–2019) have all featured him in recurring roles.
