Danny Pudi
Biography:
Daniel Mark Pudi was born on March 10, 1979, in Chicago, Illinois. He is the son of Teresa (née Komendant), a programmer and analyst, and Abraham Lazarus Pudi (1955–2018). His parents immigrated to the United States and later became naturalized citizens—his mother from Pokośno, Poland, and his father from Poduru in Andhra Pradesh, India, belonging to a Telugu Christian family. Growing up, Pudi spoke Polish with his mother and grandmother.
He was raised on Chicago’s South Side with his siblings, Adam and Katherine, and attended Notre Dame College Prep in Niles. In 2013, he returned to his alma mater to deliver the school’s commencement address.
Pudi studied dance in Chicago before attending Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he earned a degree in communication and theatre in 2001. While there, he became the first recipient of the Chris Farley Scholarship, which not only paid for a year of tuition but also led to his first improv performance alongside Jim Breuer and Dave Chappelle. After graduation, he performed in Wisconsin summer stock theatre, trained at The Second City in Chicago, and joined Stir Friday Night!, an Asian American sketch comedy group that also included future Walking Dead star Steven Yeun.
Before pursuing acting full-time, Pudi worked as a recruiter for an executive search firm, a job that allowed him to audition while working remotely. In 2005, he moved to Los Angeles to focus on television and film. After appearing in several pilots, he landed his breakout role as Abed Nadir on Community, starring in all six seasons from 2009 to 2015.
Pudi has also appeared in numerous commercials for brands like Snickers, Verizon, McDonald’s, T-Mobile, and Far Cry 4. In 2012, he was a celebrity contestant on GSN’s The Pyramid, alongside Community co-star Yvette Nicole Brown.
His film credits include Road Trip: Beer Pong and the comedy-horror Knights of Badassdom, which gained attention at Comic-Con 2011. He has made cameo appearances in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Star Trek Beyond, and Hot in Cleveland, and starred in the Jones Street Station music video for “The Understanding.”
In 2014, he appeared in the off-Broadway musical FOUND. Two years later, he played the lead role in The Tiger Hunter, a Kickstarter-funded independent film directed by Lena Khan. In 2017, Pudi began voicing Huey Duck in Disney’s DuckTales reboot and starred as Teddy in NBC’s Powerless.
Since 2020, Pudi has portrayed Brad Bakshi in Apple TV+’s Mythic Quest. That same year, he wrote his first play, Running, for En Garde Arts’ Uncommon Voices series, exploring his relationship with his father, cultural identity, and experiences with racism. The play was later adapted into a short film in 2022, directed by Arpita Mukherjee.
He reunited with Community co-star Alison Brie in the 2022 film Somebody I Used to Know, and in 2024, he began playing The Mechanist in Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Pudi is married to Bridget Showalter, whom he met during their freshman year at Marquette University. The couple has twins, a son and a daughter, born in January 2012. An avid runner, Pudi has completed multiple marathons and purchased a home in Pasadena, California, in 2014.
