Sheela Celin journey into the entertainment world began when Tamil actor S. S. Rajendran introduced her to theater at 13, offering her a role in S.S.R Nataka Mandram. She stepped into the film industry at 17 through MGR’s Tamil movie “Paasam” in 1962. Renamed “Sheela Devi” by MGR, her career burgeoned with Tamil films, though she later reverted to her original name. Her foray into Malayalam cinema came with “Bhagyajathakam” the same year.
Over two decades, Sheela amassed over 475 films across languages like Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, and Urdu. Renowned works include “Chemmeen,” “Kallichellamma,” “Akale,” and “Sthanarthy Saramma.” Notable performances are seen in “Kannapan Unni,” where she portrays a resilient yet compassionate princess, and “Kadathanattu Makkam,” where she faces false allegations and a death sentence.
Sheela directed “Yakshaganom” and “Shikarangal” during the ’70s and ’80s, even penning the screenplay for “Onnu Chiriku.” After retirement in 1983, she resurfaced with roles in films like “Manassinakkare” and “Chandramukhi.”
Together with Prem Nazir, she holds the Guinness World Record for acting in the most films (130) together. In 2005, her role in “Akale” earned her a National Film Award and a Kerala State Film Award. She secured the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress thrice. Beyond acting, Sheela showcased her artistic talents in painting, raising funds for flood relief.
