Biography:

Christopher Allen Lloyd, born October 22, 1938, is an American actor with a career spanning stage, film, and television since the 1960s. He’s best known for playing Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy (1985–1990) and Reverend Jim Ignatowski on the sitcom Taxi (1978–1983), a role that earned him two Emmy Awards.

Lloyd was born in Stamford, Connecticut, to Ruth Lapham Lloyd—a singer and sister of San Francisco’s mayor Roger Lapham—and Samuel R. Lloyd Jr., a lawyer. He was the youngest of six siblings. His maternal grandfather co-founded Texaco, and he descends from John Howland, a Mayflower passenger. He grew up in Westport, Connecticut, attending Staples High School, where he helped launch the school’s theater group, the Staples Players.

He began acting in summer theater in New York and Massachusetts, studying acting in NYC at age 19, including under Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse. His first New York stage role came in a 1961 play, and he made his Broadway debut in 1969’s Red, White and Maddox. Over the years, he performed in numerous Off-Broadway productions, including Macbeth, King Lear, and a Cocteau double bill in 1972. He later returned to Broadway in Happy End and worked at Yale Rep and other theaters.

Lloyd’s film debut was in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), where he played Max Taber. He gained wider recognition as Jim Ignatowski on Taxi and became iconic as Doc Brown in Back to the Future. Other film roles include Commander Kruge in Star Trek III, Professor Plum in Clue, Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and Uncle Fester in The Addams Family and its sequel. He also voiced characters in animated films and video games, such as Kingdom Hearts.

Lloyd has appeared in many television shows, including Amazing Stories, Deadly Games, Stacked, Tremors: The Series, Numb3rs, Psych, and Fringe. He took on stage roles like Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol (2008) and Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman (2010). In the 2010s, he reprised his role as Doc Brown in Back to the Future: The Game and promotional events.

He appeared in a variety of roles throughout the 2010s and 2020s, including in The Conners, Roseanne, Spirit Halloween: The Movie, The Adam Project, and as Commissioner Helgait in The Mandalorian (2023). In 2024, he starred in the live-action Knuckles series.

Lloyd has been married five times. His first marriage to Catharine Boyd lasted from 1959 to 1971. He later married Kay Tornborg (1974–c.1987), Carol Ann Vanek (early 1990s), Jane Walker Wood (1992–2005), and Lisa Loiacono, whom he married in 2016. His Montecito home was destroyed in the 2008 Tea Fire.

His mother Ruth passed away in 1984. Among his siblings were Samuel Lloyd III and Donald L. Mygatt. His nephew, Sam Lloyd (1963–2020), was an actor best known for his role on Scrubs.
