Biography:
Charles Laughton was a very famous English actor and filmmaker known for his versatility and great acting talents on stages of theatre, films and television. Charles Laughton was born on July 1, 1899, in Scarborough, England. Charles Laughton at first got his education in theatre, then he became an active performer of theatre plays and films. Some of the films Charles Laughton worked with were The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), The Big Clock (1948) and Witness for the Prosecution (1957).
Charles Laughton was awarded the Oscar for Best Actor for his role of King Henry VIII in The Private Life of Henry VIII, and thus, Charles Laughton became the first British actor who won the award in this category. Moreover, Charles Laughton received Oscar nomination for two more films – Mutiny on the Bounty and Witness for the Prosecution. As a filmmaker Charles Laughton directed The Night of the Hunter (1955) – the psychological thriller, and nowadays this film is considered a classic of American cinema.
Also, Charles Laughton was known as an excellent stage actor, especially his performance of Shakespeare plays. Charles Laughton died on December 15, 1962, in Hollywood, California.
