Biography:
Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889, in London and was one of the most influential people in the history of movies because he was an English actor, comedian, filmmaker, and composer. He gained worldwide popularity in the era of silent film due to his Little Tramp character, which had unique looks with his signature bowler hat, toothbrush moustache, cane, and walking style. Chaplin was not only the performer but also the writer, director, producer, editor, and even musician for the movies that he starred in. He created such classic movies like The Kid (1921), The Gold Rush (1925), City Lights (1931), and Modern Times (1936).
Chaplin successfully managed to adapt to making sound movies when creating his The Great Dictator (1940), where he was playing a parody of Adolf Hitler and had his first big speaking role. Later on, he starred in such movies like Monsieur Verdoux (1947), Limelight (1952), and A King in New York (1957). Chaplin got two awards for his outstanding contribution to the film industry; in 1972, he received an Honorary Academy Award and another Academy Award in 1973 for scoring his movie Limelight. Chaplin resided in Switzerland later in life and in 1975 received knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. Charlie Chaplin died on December 25, 1977, and left the legacy of one of the greatest and most influential artists in the history of film.
