Ooty, Tamil Nadu, is where Chandru was born. His family eventually settled in Chennai as a result of his father’s job requiring frequent movements. Following his family’s advice, Chandru initially sought a profession in engineering. But in spite of his family’s early disapproval, he took the risky decision to pursue a career in filmmaking.
He began his career helping Tirru, the cinematographer. Over the course of four years, he has helped on seven films. While working on Petta (2019), one of Karthik Subbaraj’s associates connected him to Sanal Kumar Sasidharan.
Chandru’s first Malayalam film, Kayattam (2020), earned him the Kerala State Film Award for Best Cinematography in 2021. The entire movie was shot in the Himalayas using one iPhone XS Max.
He contributed to the 2022 film Madhura Manohara Moham, directed by Stephy Zaviour and starring Sharafudheen and Rajisha Vijayan. His work on “Kayattam” with director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan marked a major turning point in his career, and he was able to collaborate with him once more in 2022.
