Pop singer and actor Ceylon Manohar, also known as A. E. Manoharan (Anthony Pillai Emmanuel Manoharan) or Surangani Manohar, was a pop singer and actor. He has appeared in several Sri Lankan Tamil productions as well as Tamil movies. Manoharan passed away in Chennai at the age of 73 from age-related illnesses.
His most well-known song is “Surangani,” which became a cult hit in Tamil Nadu throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
Manohar has his sights set on acting from an early age, even though he is most known for his singing. In the 1960s, while attending St. John’s College in Jaffna, he started performing in plays. Manohar, like many other Sri Lankans of his time, traveled to India to continue his education. He would frequently travel to what was then Madras while doing his bachelor’s degree in Trichy in an attempt to land a part in a movie. All he could manage at the time was a little part in M M A Chinnappa Thevar’s 1970 film Maanavan.
Manohar returned to Sri Lanka, where he began his career as a teacher before deciding to pursue singing full-time. When Manohar started giving frequent performances at important locations in Sri Lanka in the early 1970s, the music of that nation was going through a significant transition. He was one of the forerunners of the nation’s new pop movement, fusing contemporary music components with Baila. He sang in English, Tamil, and Sinhala with similar ease.
His version of Surangani became well-known throughout the island thanks to Sri Lankan Broadcasting Corporation (previously Radio Ceylon), which had a devoted following in India throughout the 1970s. Manohar began visiting Madras on a regular basis when the song gained popularity in India, and he gradually started landing movie roles. Manohar was cast in supporting roles in movies starring Sivaji Ganesan, his hero, and other legendary Tamil film stars. He went on to perform in films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, typically in the role of a villain. At that time, his long, curly hair, beard, and overweight build made him an excellent choice for the part of “bad guy.”
