Billie Paul Piper, originally named Leian Paul Piper and born on 22 September 1982 in Swindon, Wiltshire, is an English actress and former pop singer. She gained early fame in the music industry at just 15 when her debut single “Because We Want To” topped the UK charts, making her the youngest female artist to achieve that milestone. Her first album, Honey to the B (1998), was a commercial success, followed by Walk of Life (2000), which featured another number-one hit, “Day & Night.” In 2003, she retired from music to pursue acting full-time.
Piper is best known for playing Rose Tyler in the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who (2005–2006), with additional appearances in 2008, 2010, and the 50th anniversary special in 2013. She returned in 2025’s episode “The Reality War” in an enigmatic role related to a regeneration from the Fifteenth Doctor, though her character was not explicitly named.
Her acting career also includes notable roles such as Belle de Jour in Secret Diary of a Call Girl (2007–2011), Brona Croft/Lily in Penny Dreadful (2014–2016), and Karen Mars in Netflix’s Collateral (2018), for which she received a BAFTA nomination. She co-created and starred in the acclaimed series I Hate Suzie (2020–2022), earning multiple BAFTA nominations for her performance as Suzie Pickles.
On stage, Piper has earned critical acclaim, particularly for her lead role in Yerma, which won her the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Play in 2017.
Raised in Swindon, Piper legally changed her name to Billie in infancy. She began dancing at age five and entered acting after appearing in commercials and a small role in Evita (1996). She trained at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London.
Before her Doctor Who fame, she appeared in films like The Calcium Kid and Things to Do Before You’re 30 (2004), and starred in Spirit Trap (2005). Her performance as Rose Tyler earned her multiple awards and public recognition, cementing her successful transition from pop star to respected actress.
In later years, Piper made her directorial debut with Rare Beasts (2019), and starred in Eternal Beauty the same year. She’s also set to appear in various upcoming productions including Netflix’s Scoop, the Wednesday season two cast, and an adaptation of Catherine Called Birdy.
On the personal front, Piper married TV host Chris Evans in 2001 at age 18; they separated in 2004 and divorced in 2007. Later that year, she wed actor Laurence Fox, with whom she had two sons before divorcing in 2016. She then had a daughter with musician Johnny Lloyd in 2019. The couple parted ways in 2023.
