Bhupinder Singh (6 February 1940 – 18 July 2022) was a renowned Indian musician, ghazal singer, and Bollywood playback singer known for his distinctive voice. Born in Amritsar, Punjab, to Natha Singhji, a musician, Bhupinder initially resisted music due to his father’s strict teachings. However, he later became a prominent figure in the music industry.
Bhupinder Singh’s journey into music began under the guidance of Satish Bhatia at All India Radio and Doordarshan Center in New Delhi. In 1962, his talent caught the attention of music director Madan Mohan, leading to his playback singing debut in Chetan Anand’s film “Haqeeqat,” where he sang the song “Hoke Majboor Mujhe Usne Bulaya Hoga” alongside legends like Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mahmood, and Manna Dey.
Bhupinder Singh’s playback career featured unique solo performances and collaborations with Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi. Notable songs include “Dil Dhoondta hai,” “Do diwane shahar mein,” “Naam gum jayega,” and “Kabhi kisi ko mukammal.” Apart from playback singing, he released private albums, including “Woh Jo Shair Tha” with lyrics by Gulzar.
