Ashish Pandey
Biography:
Ashish Pandey is an Indian filmmaker, writer and director whose work focuses on human experiences, loneliness and the lives of people whose stories are often overlooked. Based in Mumbai, he studied sound engineering at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata, graduating in 2000. Before establishing himself as an independent filmmaker, he worked as a television copywriter and sound professional.
Pandey made his directorial debut with The Cabin Man in 2007. The short film follows an isolated railway cabin attendant whose quiet routine raises questions about time, loneliness and the direction of life. His second film, Open Doors, released in 2010, explores isolation through the experiences of a woman whose memories connect her to a world beyond her immediate surroundings.
His third short film, Nooreh (2018), brought him wider international recognition. Set in a village near the India–Pakistan border in Kashmir, the film follows an eight-year-old girl who believes that staying awake can stop the sounds of gunfire. Through a child’s perspective, the story explores the emotional consequences of conflict on ordinary families. The film won the Sonje Award for Best Short Film in the Asian competition at the Busan International Film Festival.
Pandey’s filmmaking is distinguished by its restrained storytelling, thoughtful imagery and interest in marginalised voices. His work demonstrates how short films can communicate complex social realities through intimate, personal stories.
