Indian cinematographer Aseem Mishra has experience with Bollywood productions. New York (2009), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Dabangg 2 (2012), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Phantom (2015), Dream Girl (2019), and so on are a few of his flicks.
He attended MCRC, Jamia Millia Islamia, to study cinematography. With the exception of Kabul Express, he filmed most of Kabir Khan’s movies.
Studying cinematography was always Aseem’s secret dream since she loved to see old classic films at the Dhanbad Railway Club as a teenager. The lighting techniques of Swedish cinematographer Sven Nykvist and the works of Satyajit Ray, the Father of Indian cinematography, left a deep impression on him.
Aseem has also disclosed to Pandolin.com the names of a few musicians that have influenced him. Artists including Picasso, Van Gogh, Marc Chagall, and Salvador Dali; photographers like Man Ray, Ansel Adams, and Henri Cartier-Bresson; and cinematographers like.
Laszlo Kovacs, Gordon Willis, Vilmos Zsigmond, and others are included in the list. In addition, he has been deeply impacted by Michael Ondaatje’s and Pablo Neruda’s attention to detail. Still, Ernst Ingmar Bergman remains his ideal director.
After collapsing from MCRC, Aseem Mishra started his career behind the camera while working with TV18. While working on the TV show Bhanwar, which aired on channel Sony, he was first exposed to fiction at this organization. The show got positive reviews.
It was during this critical time that he gained and honed his technical skills, as disclosed to The Quint. Aseem, who had never worked with a director before and had only followed his instincts, concluded that his strategies were working and that he was best served by a single source of light.
It is his documentary period that is responsible for Aseem’s aesthetic sensibility and gut feeling. He went on a few documentarian shoots with his senior colleague Kabir Khan. They even collaborated with veteran filmmaker and journalist Saeed Naqvi.
Working on documentaries strengthened his intuition, gave him a better understanding of how the sun moves, how characters move in an action film, how to utilize long lenses, and how to use natural light against artificial light—all of these skills eventually benefited him in his Bollywood career.
