Appu Prabhakar studied cinematography at Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute and earned a Bachelor of Technology from National Institute of Technology Calicut. He was employed by the Malayalam film Comrade in America (2017) as a second camera operator. He got the National Film Award for Best Non-Feature Film Cinematography in 2018 for his work as a cinematographer on the short film Eye Test. His filmography includes various Malayalam, Bengali, and Nepali productions. Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya (2020) was his Telugu feature debut.
