Anvita Dutt Guptan is an Indian dialogue writer, screenplay writer, story writer, lyricist, and director in Bollywood. Born on February 20, 1972, she grew up in various military cantonments across India, including Hindon, Guwahati, Jodhpur, and Saharanpur, due to her father’s career in the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Dutt worked in advertising for 14 years before transitioning to the film industry. Her film career began when she was introduced to Aditya Chopra by Rekha Nigam, a dialogue writer known for “Parineeta” and “Laaga Chunari Mein Daag.” Dutt started as a lyricist and screenwriter with Yash Raj Films, then worked with Dharma Productions as a lyricist and dialogue writer. She also collaborated with Nadiadwala Grandson Films on two projects, and with Nikhil Advani as a dialogue writer and lyricist. After a stint with Phantom Films, she returned to Yash Raj Films, specifically under their Y Films banner, for two films.
Dutt has directed films for Clean Slate Filmz. Her directorial debut, “Bulbbul,” was released as a Netflix Original on June 24, 2020. The film, set in the 1880s Bengal presidency, revolves around a child bride’s journey from innocence to strength. It received positive reviews for its feminist themes, visual effects, background music.
Her second directorial venture, “Qala,” starring Tripti Dimri, is a period drama set in the 1930s and ’40s. Released on December 1, 2022, this film, written and directed by Dutt, explores the dark side of ambition and the impact of an abusive childhood.
