Alexandre Desplat

Biography:

Alexandre Desplat is a celebrated French film composer, orchestrator and conductor recognised internationally for creating beautiful and emotionally expressive music for cinema. Born on August 23, 1961, in Paris, France, he grew up in a multicultural family with a French father and a Greek mother. He developed an interest in music during childhood and began learning the piano at the age of five. He later studied trumpet and flute and received classical musical training at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.

Alexandre began his career composing music for French films before gaining international recognition through Girl with a Pearl Earring. Over the years, he has worked with several acclaimed filmmakers and composed music for a wide variety of films, including The King’s Speech, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Shape of Water and the Harry Potter films. His distinctive compositions combine orchestral arrangements with different musical influences, creating memorable soundtracks.

He has received two Academy Awards for The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Shape of Water, along with several BAFTA, Golden Globe and Grammy Awards. In Greta Gerwig’s Little Women (2019), he composed the original background score, earning another Academy Award nomination. Through his creativity, musical knowledge and passion for cinema, Alexandre Desplat has become one of the most respected film composers in the world.
