Alex Hassell

Biography:

Alexander Stephen Hassell was born on September 7, 1980, in Southend, England, as the youngest of four children in a vicar’s family.

He attended Moulsham High School in Chelmsford, Essex, before pursuing acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama for two and a half years. Hassell has had an extensive stage career, most notably portraying Hal in Henry IV Parts I and II and Henry in Henry V for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He is also a co-founder of The Factory Theatre Company, whose patrons include Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy, Mark Rylance, and Emma Thompson.

His television debut came in 2001 with an episode of Queen of Swords. His first Hollywood role was in George Clooney’s Suburbicon (2017), where he starred alongside Matt Damon and Julianne Moore. That same year, he played a significant role in the BBC adaptation of Jessie Burton’s The Miniaturist, co-starring with Anya Taylor-Joy, which aired on Boxing Day.

In 2019, Hassell portrayed Translucent in the first season of Amazon Prime Video’s The Boys. In 2021, he took on the role of Vicious in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop. He later appeared as Metatron in the final season of the BBC/HBO fantasy series His Dark Materials.

In 2024, he starred as playboy Rupert Campbell-Black in Disney+’s adaptation of the 1986 novel Rivals, joining a cast that included David Tennant, Danny Dyer, Aidan Turner, Emily Atack, and Katherine Parkinson.

Hassell has been married to fellow actor Emma King since January 2011. The two met while training at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
