Alan Arkin

Biography:

Alan Arkin was a renowned American actor, director, and musician versatile in both comedy and drama films. Born on March 26, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York, Arkin began his career by performing in improvisational theater and later became part of the Second City comedy group in Chicago. His film debut was in The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966) for which he received his first Academy Award nomination in the category of Best Actor. Subsequently, Arkin performed in films such as Wait Until Dark (1967), The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1968), The In-Laws (1979), Edward Scissorhands (1990), and Glengarry Glen Ross (1992).

Arkin was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role of Edwin Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine (2006), a movie that received considerable critical acclaim. Further, he acted in Argo (2012) where he received his second Oscar nomination, The Big Year (2011), Going in Style (2017), and The Kominsky Method, the latter for which he received Emmy nominations. Besides being a talented performer and a film star, Arkin was a distinguished stage actor and theater director, having received Tony Award nominations among others. Arkin was known for his subtlety in his humor and emotionality, besides being a great comedian who could perform drama films. He was active in movies and television for over six decades before passing away on June 29, 2023, in Carlsbad, California, aged 89 years.
